The Apology Line is an Experimental Documentary based on anonymous confessions. Some of the confessions can be quite humorous, while some of the confessions are hard hitting and difficult to listen to. This documentary has a unique style in which is uses non sync sound to present the audience with this information while showing the audience images in which can relate to what is being told through the confessions.
This style is something I found really interesting and is something I would like to use in our own documentary. Its kind of a poetic documentary in a sense, and is something we have tried to do in our first documentary (a spectrum of a gender), by using a lot of imagery of Sophie both when she was younger and doing things outside of the interview setting. We would like to develop this in our second documentary by not using any sync sound and just having confessions throughout it.
The mixture of serious and funny stories is quite interesting. I found the funnier stories made the hard hitting stories even harder to listen to as we are caught off guard. I think this makes the documentary more important as it shows the diversity in human kind. It shows how such an open task can produce completely different reactions.
Overall I think this film is brilliantly made. The editing and the cinematography is beautiful and something I hope to keep in mind when I create my own documentaries.
